Reasons Homeschool Supporters Should Know about the HSLDA

Updated: Apr 13

The HSLDA (Homeschool Legal Defense Association) is an important resource in the homeschool community, which not only provides legal protection for homeschoolers but also is a useful resource for your state's homeschool laws. They represent homeschool families in court (if needed) and advocate for homeschoolers in the political arena, having won many of the lawsuits that confirmed the Constitutional right to homeschool.

HSLDA is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We encourage you to visit their website for more information about their organization. https://hslda.org

Depending on the state, homeschool laws are sometimes complicated to follow. These laws can leave many homeschool families in a state of uncertainty and worry. More so, school district adminstrators will often create confusing extra-legal policies designed to complicate the legal aspects of homeschooling, so as to deter potential homeschoolers. The HSLDA can cut through all of this. They put out a monthly magazine to members outlining the different legal cases HSLDA is assisting with as well as articles pertaining to homeschooling.

They provide information about state homeschool laws

One of the very first steps a homeschool family should do when planning to homeschool regardless of the age of the child, is to familiarize themselves with their states homeschool law. HSLDA publishes all homeschools laws on their website. Please note, that while some states have higher regulation than others, it is not impossible to homeschool in those states. Homeschooling is legal in all states.

Reasons homeschool families should consider membership

They provide legal counsel to the homeschool community.

This is a form of "insurance"; a "just-in-case" for the one out of a thousand times that a a school administrator decides that you don't have rights (or conversely, they are incompetent and simply don't know law, which happens often as well). Unfortunately, we live in a world where we may need a lawyer to exercise our constitutional rights, and as an HSLDA member, you can contact them for any homeschooling related legal issue you may encounter. A HSLDA membership is important especially in higher regulation states. A HSLDA attorney can help families navigate these sometimes complicated laws. We recommend a lifetime membership so that you don't have to worry about making an annual payment.

Retail stores teacher discounts are generally extended to homeschool families. We can get discounts at museums as well. There are also discounts listed on their website for Avis car rental, Thrift books, Raddish kids subscription service and a variety of other discounts.

Reasons Homeschool supporters should consider donating.

They advocate for homeschoolers in the political arena.

As homeschooling has become more popular and has gotten the attention of legislators, there has been an increase of laws and regulations that restrict homeschooling, redirect tax dollars or create voucher programs. All of this legislation is intended to restrict or limit our right to homeschool freely. HSLDA advocates for and attends hearings for new school choice voucher laws affecting the homeschool community.

They provide financial homeschool grants for those who need it.

Single parents, natural disaster victims and low income families can apply for homeschool grants. Visit their website for info on applying or donating.

Donating to HSLDA is a practical way to help the homeschool community.
