Parents and school officials knew of the harassment before she took her life. In reality, we are the ones paying the settlement with our taxes. https://www.nj.com/education/2024/09/bullying-lawsuit-settled-for-200k-at-nj-school-where-another-student-died-by-suicide.html
These stories are not rare or fringe. This is an epidemic that is not being taken seriously enough. The common narrative in these most of these cases is that parents knew about the harassment, informed school administrators, and the school did not respond or discipline the bullies appropriately. Bullying continued and the child killed themself.

School is set up to fail. Serious question, What can they do? Schools are over crowded and understaffed, creating a "Lord of the Flies" environment. Children not only need supervision, they need adults to facilitate healthy interaction. However, there are few adults in the halls, bathrooms, corners, or all of the other places managing the thousands of youth and their conversations. Even in class, teachers have a hard time detecting bullying. Teachers and school administrators have to be physically present and direct observing students to prevent bad behavior (which includes verbal and physical harassment), but this is rarely the case.
Schools are legally not empowered to turn away children accused of bullying or "terminate service contracts" the same way a private school can if a child is not following rules of conduct. And any discipline that is planned for a bully can be fought by the parent of the child receiving discipline, where often such children are not disciplined at all. They don't care about consequences anyway, especially if the punishment for bullying is day off from school (suspension). And in a world of lazy and gentle parenting, students literally grow up with no consequences for their behavior: they end up having no fear or respect for authority, including school resource officers.
Parents, public school supporters and school administrators are facilitating this abuse, some by neglect and some my ignorance; and in some cases, the bully may be supported by teachers. (Or worse, the teacher is the bully).
There is an ongoing conversation about "Suicide Prevention". September is Suicide Awareness Month. The ribbon in this post is the "suicide prevention" ribbon. There are Suicide awareness walks. Hotlines are set up and staffed.
How about we stop putting kids in dangerous schools to prevent suicide?
