Reasons NOT to Include the Easter Bunny This Year in Easter

Updated: Apr 13

You don't need a mythological (pagan) character to celebrate Easter. Not every parent does it and you have a choice whether you do it.

Easter is a Christian holiday. It is the most holy day for Christians. It commemorates Jesus' crucification and resurrection and the Easter Bunny has nothing to do with this sacred historical event that is an integral part of the Christian faith.

Celebrating the “Easter bunny” is offensive to God. It perverts and paganizes our Christian holiday. Do you believe that Jesus is real? That he died on the cross and rose again three days later? If so, then Christianity should be taken seriously and we should celebrate this important holiday with the truth. Celebrating Resurrection Sunday by including the Easter Bunny removes Jesus from the holiday that is supposed to be about Him and only Him.

Including the Easter Bunny communicates to children that lying is OK. We should never lie to our kids, and we certainly shouldn't convey to them that Easter is about a character that brings them candy in a basket or has something to do with finding eggs in the garden. We also shouldn't tell them that the tooth fairy brought them money either or that gifts at Christmas time come from a fantasy character. We want to teach our kids that lying is wrong. When someone lies to you, trust is broken and you may (correctly) believe they have lied about other things. We want our children to know that everything we tell them is true. Having a relationship with our kids so that they trust us is more important than bringing candy or pagan characters into their lives. But by including the Easter Bunny in Easter, we are conveying an emotionally-driven lie to our children: that Easter is about getting candy and gifts from a fantasy character. Moreover, we are conveying this lie to children who cannot yet fully discern the difference between right and wrong; nor between the truth and falsehood. They hear our words and see our actions and believe us to be the model of the adult world. But then they will later learn that as parents, we've been deceiving them.

Moreover, by including the Easter Bunny we are actually committing a form of blasphemy! We are taking something that is the most sacred part of the Christian religion and covering it with... what? Getting candy? Some kind in a fake bunny suit? Finding eggs in the grass? The right thing to do on Easter is to convey, in an age and maturity-level appropriate manner, what Easter is all about. The Easter Bunny is a blasphemy and Christians should cease from continuing this pagagn tradition right now!

This lie even endures into our children's lives when they become adults. It can be life long and will be repeated when our children do the same thing to their children. Do you remember how you felt after learning that your parents lied to you for 10+ years?

But you have the option to celebrate Easter without the Easter Bunny this year. Its an easy choice.

And by celebrating the Easter bunny, our culture (e.g. "The World") makes it so you can enjoy Easter without Jesus. Non-christians love Easter. They like getting vacation days off of work and giving and receiving baskets full of candy and gifts. They enjoy gathering for Easter feasts, baking with family and decorating their home. They don't want Jesus in their lives at all.

.

"The World" loves the Easter Bunny and makes it difficult to remove from celebrating the Easter. There are sections in the stores dedicated to filling easter baskets and bunny decor. Where are are crosses? Where is the tomb model where Jesus was placed after he was killed and rose again three days later? And our children are not supposed to tell other kids that the Easter Bunny is not real; however, it is fine for other children and society to lie and convince our kids that he is real.

The Easter bunny is a relationship, not a character like Mickey Mouse or Spiderman you see at theme parks. At an age when children cannot tell what is true and what is fantasy, they are taught that he comes and surprises them with presents on Easter eve. Your family goes to visit him and pays money for photos. The photos happen even if the child is scared or crying. If this was any other adult, any other time of year, you would never force your child to be in close proximity with them. It would be inappropriate and grooming.

Your child cares for him by leaving carrots for him for when he visits. Your child can track him on aps and web sites. This is all a big lie, and why should a child trust a parent that lies to them about something that is so important?

Just stop it.

It removes the blessing of giving gifts to your children. Giving gifts is an act of love that strengthens your relationship with your child and between siblings. Do not give that special bond to a fictional surrogate. If your child wants a video game, he will appreciate the item more because you gave it to him. And when this relationship is tested, it willhold firm because you acts of love will be first and foremost in their minds. The love between you will grow because you gave your child a thoughtful gift that he actually likes and uses. Imagine the relationship you are cultivating by allowing The Easter Bunny the privilege of giving gifts to your children, the memories it creates and why it is devastating for some kids to learn it was all a lie: a lie that you told to them and that you continued for years on end.

What does this have to do with Jesus?
What does this have to do with Jesus?

Parents who do the Easter bunny replace Godly parenting and discipline with threats of the Easter bunny not bringing treats.

Stop it. You don't need the Easter Bunny.

Celebrate Easter for what it is really about: The Joyous Resurrection of Jesus who has Saved us and is Saving the World from Sin.

There are plenty of ways to celebrate Easter without the Easter bunny. Give gifts directly to your kids. Meetup with friends or family for dinner, go to a Church service, read and talk about the resurrection with your family, bake or do an art project.
