In our society, teachers are celebrated more than other occupations. They are given special career incentives, tenure and celebrated during “teacher appreciation” weeks. A local town threw a special party for teachers (see photo below).

Some teachers are not qualified to teach
According the National Center on teacher quality, "Many states have lowered (or removed entirely) academic requirements for entry into teacher preparation requirements. Only 15 states now require candidates to pass a basic skills test for admission, down from 25 in 2015. And while many states impose a minimum GPA, they also set a standard that almost always falls below the average college GPA of 3.0." See link.
In November 2024 a group of 5 school faculty members were charged for their connection to a school certification testing cheating scandal. People would pay these 5 individuals to take the test for them. At least 200 teachers were falsely certified and at least two of those who paid for the certifications were charged with crimes against children. This has reportedly been going on since 2020. link
In December 2024, it was reported that NJ is no longer requires teachers to pass basic math, reading and writing tests for certification. link
Teachers are getting arrested too often
The truth of the the matter is, is that there are people in our society, (and teachers as well) in who cannot be around children. Child abuse, assault, pedophiles, and those who engage in (felony) teacher/student "romances" are becoming common place in public schools. And these stories are not rare nor exceptional. At the same time, we have become desensitized by the amount of news stories featuring former teachers. This behavior is not normal and should be treated with the disgust and the attention it deserves.
We are facilitating this behavior via our taxes. Schools have been terrible stewards of our taxes to the degree of hiring teachers without performing the necessary background checks and not putting in place the appropriate safety protocols to prevent it from happening.
Below are some recent reports of teachers committing crimes against the children they care for.

States have made grooming legal

Pedophile teachers engaging in felony teacher/student "romances" are becoming common
Mary Kay Letourneau was a teacher in the 90's who had a "relationship" with a 12 year old student that resulted in two children. This story gained wide spread attention due to the extreme nature of the situation: a trusted teacher getting pregnant by a child while in her care. The story was also widely publicized due to the rarity of the crime. It was shocking that something so unthinkable could happen.
In 2025, we seem to see these stories on a daily basis.
Here are some examples.
Alissa McCommon: "Teacher Who Got Pregnant After Raping Boy, 12, gets 25 years in Prison: 'Burn in Hell'. Alissa McCommon pleaded guilty to raping a child and other charges and was ordered to have no contact with the baby fathered by her victim" https://people.com/alissa-mccommon-teacher-pregnant-raping-boy-sentenced-prison-8766108
"Shawnee Nicole Despain, 26, resigned from her teaching role after an investigation revealed she was in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student and fell pregnant by him". https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/us-news/teacher-relationship-teen-student-didnt-34704247
"Patrick Corr faced a local judge Friday. Police say he gave teens alcohol, had sex with them, and got one pregnant. " https://www.kob.com/new-mexico/detention-hearing-postponed-for-former-aps-teacher-accused-of-having-inappropriate-relationship-with-students/

About teachers in the homeschool world
As homeschoolers, we have a better ability to keep our children safe from abusive and predatory adults.
As parents, it is our job to keep our children safe. Most of us are proactive about our children's safety in other places: such as on Internet, with other children, and in the care of other adults like teachers.
We see parenting going one extreme or the other often in regards to keeping children safe. Parents are allowing their children to have extreme freedom when in the care of seemingly any adult, such as in a school setting. We also see the other extreme of parents who will not leave their kids with anyone including a date night babysitter. We have witnessed imbalanced safety rules in families where their child is allowed to have unsupervised freedom online, but won't do a non-drop off playdate where all adults would be present.
Here are some ways we keep our children safe from predator adults.
We have close proximity with the adults in charge and are often in the same building when our children are in their care like in the waiting room of gymnastics. Our Music school has cameras in the classrooms with glass doors that are clearly there for everyone's safety. We have a babysitter who is sometimes alone with our children, however my husband and I are in and out of our home often giving the illusion that we could walk in at any moment. We have a good business relationship with our babysitter which includes good communication about their day and the schedule.
We are discerning about who we leave our children with. We have freedom of association. If we do not like our child's art school for whatever reason, we can discontinue services. We do not do drop off playdates or birthday parties and only do them when all parents are there to help keep the children safe.
If any shenanigans were to happen, we would know about it because we cultivate a healthy relationship with our kids. We are not "two ships passing in the night" but instead have daily ongoing dialogue of questions about life, current events, friendships and how their music lesson went. We make dinners around the table a priority. We also teach our children correct boundaries and the difference between keeping something private ( like the amount of money you own in your piggy bank) vs. keeping a secret from someone.
Our children are in the care of other adults less often than our Public school peers. This allows for less idle time where crimes can happen. Public school children are in school, before and after school care and extra curricular activities. They are literally hardly ever home with their parents. Even during the summer months, it is normal for a public school child to be away from their parents for extreme lengths of time.

Abuse at school is an epidemic. We've put together an archive of school abuse cases and new ones come up faster than I can possibly add them to the archive.
