How to Talk to Your Children About What Happened to Charlie Kirk

We are living history, unfortunately.
Charlie Kirk was a conservative political speaker who was publicly assassinated while speaking at a college in Utah on September 10, 2025. He was assassinated by a deluded individual who listened to the directives of Democrats and then acted based upon their intended plans against their intended targets. Regardless of what the news media will tell you, this person did exactly what the Democrats wanted. And while individuals such as this would describe themselves as "Anti-fascists" they are in fact, the true fascists, as they are following a fascist playbook and doing exactly what fascists have done in other countries throughout the history of fascism.
We have seen comments on social media describing this event being "this generations 9/11". We agree with that. Charlie Kirks assassination is a significant historical event that should be treated with the respect and attention that it deserves.

Teach your children about what an assassination is.
The assassination of a public figure holds great significance. If Charlie had passed away in virtually any other way; in a car accident or from an illness, we would still be mourning his death; however, it would have had less impact and historical significance. Charlie Kirk became a martyr that day, a martyr for the principles of freedom and truth, which make our country great. He was committed to telling the truth of matters as loudly and as broadly as possible despite the social, economic, and even -- mortal -- risks involved.
In June 2025, Minnesota legislator Melissa Hortman was murdered alongside her husband at their home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. They were also assassinated. However, they were not killed publicly: there are no graphic videos of their murder all over the internet; nor any controversies over the reason for their deaths. People were not celebrating their deaths on the internet, nor did much become of the event. While their assassinations are tragic and we fully believe that their murderer should be brought to justice, the accomplishments and actions of Melissa Hortman and her husband pale in comparison to those of Charlie Kirk's.
In our view, Charlie Kirk has the same status as Martin Luther King Jr. He spoke the truth to liberate others, and he was killed for doing so. He led a movement to change the world, and did so. In many ways, part of the reason that freedom and the principles of the Constitution are being restored to their rightful place today is because people like Charlie Kirk were brave enough to stand up against the fascists and the moral evils of our time.
Consider the deaths of two other recent political public figures. Rush Limbaugh passed away at the age of 70. Former President Jimmy Carter passed way recently in December 2024 at the age of 100 years old. Both of these deaths events are historical in their own right; however, they are still much different than what happened to Charlie Kirk.
We spoke to our children about what an assassination is, and why this type of murder holds a greater level of significance than in other situations.

Parents! You should be discussing current events and news with your children.
The media has proven time and time again to be dominated by morally corrupt left-wing propagandists, who only intend to dissimulate or omit the truth of matters, while exaggerating anything that will harm their politicial opponents. Online influencers, Youtube creators and AI are free to lie or share whatever they want as their speech is protected by their First Amendment, but we cannot trust any of them to tell the truth about our president, our history or even what happened to Charlie Kirk. You, as a parent, need to tell the truth to your children, because no one else will. And if you don't, they are likely to consume the lies of others around them.
The education system is also well known to be deeply entrenched in left-wing ideology. Schools also cannot and will not teach everything-- so they filter out or reduce anything that is pro-America or supports freedom and the principles embedded in the Constitution to make it easier to teach and to reinforce their propaganda. The real history of the United States is a complex story of freedom: its not a news by-line about white-male oppressors. They have a schedule to keep and a curriculum to follow. And we cannot trust school text books to tell the truth either: how long will it take for this significant historical event to get written into history text books without a left leaning bias, if ever?
We (parents) must be that truth for our children and the next generation. We must tell our children what happened to Charlie Kirk and who he was and what he spoke of. Now, 10 years from now and 20 years from now, we need our kids to know that a great leader was killed and his only crime "per-se", was bringing the truth to the world and standing up against evil. We need to do the same as Charlie Kirk did: maybe not on social media or in media in such a public manner, but in the ways that each of us is empowered to do.

Tell them in an age-appropriate manner
We told our children at dinner time that a man named Charlie Kirk was assassinated. We told them that when someone is assassinated, it's different than murder because he was a public figure who was killed for his speaking of his beliefs. We told them about his beliefs and how he was killed for having conservative, Christian, godly principles and talking about them with other people.
Online resources are not all bad. There are many resources online to share with your children that talk about his life, his family, and what he believed and why. There are countless videos of him engaging with college students, being a guest personality on talk shows as well as videos of him speaking on his radio show. You can use these too, but you need to review them first so that they don't sneak-in the wrong ideas into your child's mind.
Protect your children's innocence
The video of Charlie being killed is viral and available to view online whether you search for it or not. The internet does not know or care if you are 35 years old or 11 years old. Your children should not be watching people get murdered, whether on TV, in a movie, or on the news or Youtube, at least until they are teenagers.
Our culture is desensitized over violence. This video is not some Hollywood special effects or CGI project from an "R" rated horror flick. It is real. It is a real husband, father and son being murdered in broad daylight on the world's stage in front of billions of people.
I showed my 13 year old son some videos of Charlie Kirk engaging with college students. I also informed him that that if he wants to view more videos, let me know. I told him I don't want him to search for his videos himself because there are graphic videos online.
As parents, it is our responsibility to protect our children from "R" rated online media (or any dangerous situation for that matter). This horrific video is just one example.

Teach your children to respect the First Amendment.
As American citizens, we should be teaching our children about the Constitution. However, we should also emphasize the importance of the First Amendment and our freedom of speech -- right now -- because Charlie Kirk was assassinated for using his First Amendment rights. He was murdered for his political beliefs and for discussing them.
Our family has discussed what the First Amendment means. One way we teach it is by discussing a restaurant in our town that we drive by sometimes.
There is a restaurant in my town that displays the rainbow flag year' round. They also host Drag-Queen story times for kids. We disagree with that message and what the flag represents. However, we have taught our children that we, as American citizens, support the business (or homeowners) right to display it and support it as they wish. That is their First Amendment right.
We have taught our kids that we also have a First Amendment right to not to visit or buy from that business.
We also have to be responsible with the First Amendment right, as with all rights.
It is never OK to hurt someone over their beliefs.
We also have a responsibility not to bully people and not to incite violence.
Teach your children about death.
Charlie Kirk was only 31 years old.
Life is fragle. Life is short.
Sometimes when we are listening to the radio and driving around, we tell our kids what the song is about.
"Live Like You Were Dying", Tim McGraw came on the radio one evening when I was driving my 13 year old son home from music lessons. This conversation happened around the time when there was a plane crash and there were many people on that flight who presumably believed that they would have a tomorrow.
I told him that many people think they have plenty of time to live. To travel. To accomplish goals. To do what they want to do in life. But that is not true. Life can be short. Life is fragile. You never really know how long you will be on this earth. For example, consider the tragic fate of Iryna Zarutska, who was murdered in cold blood only 2 days before Charlie Kirk's assassination.
I explained that some people have some knowledge about when their time is up. They have a terminal illness like cancer, where doctors can give a patient a guess about how long they have until they pass away. They are "dying" as described in the song. This is of course a guess, even in this situation a patient never really knows how long they have until they pass.
In the song, Tim McGraw talks about "living like you were dying". What if you lived as if you were told you had cancer and had a few months to live. What would you do differently? Visit family more often? Fly to paris? Knit more? Get married sooner rather than later?

There are so many people online celebrating the public execution of a political figure they disagree with. Many of whom are in the classrooms, educating and shaping the minds of our nations children using our tax dollars.
